What is Therapeutic Recreation or Recreational Therapy? Therapeutic Recreation is the purposeful use of play, recreation and leisure experiences or activities to bring about a change in one’s physical, mental, social or emotional well-being. Activities are designed to promote growth and independence of the individual while eliminating, rehabilitating or reducing the effects of one’s disability.
Who Benefits from Therapeutic Rec. Services? Children and adults with disabilities can benefit from therapeutic recreation services. Participants may have a continued need for therapy services that can be carried out in a community setting. The goal of community-based therapeutic recreation is to promote life-long active participation within one’s own community.
Who provides services? All therapy services at Easters Seals are provided by certified and/or licensed therapists who specialize in the provision of therapeutic recreation services to individuals across the life span. Therapists work closely with the family, the participant’s physician, and other health care practitioners setting treatment goals that are realistic and consistent with the individual’s needs. Therapy involves one-to-one instructional support or small group sessions.
Where are programs conducted? Programs are conducted in community pools and other recreational facilities. The Center currently uses the South Portland Community Center and the Reiche Pool in Portland. Some programs are also held in the Easter Seals office located at 125 Presumpscot Street, Portland, Me 04103
